Google’s AI-driven research and note-taking tool, NotebookLM, has introduced new customization options for its Audio Overviews, which are AI-generated podcasts featuring virtual hosts that summarize and discuss user-uploaded documents, such as academic readings, legal briefs, or research papers. These enhancements allow users to tailor the tone and style of the podcasts to better suit their needs. When creating an Audio Overview, users can now choose from four distinct formats: “Deep Dive,” “Brief,” “Critique,” or “Debate.” The Deep Dive format features two AI hosts engaging in an in-depth, conversational exploration of the topic, asking questions and unpacking details with nuance. The Brief format is designed for quick comprehension, condensing the core ideas from uploaded sources into a short, digestible summary. The Critique format offers a detailed review of the documents, providing constructive feedback to help users refine their work. Meanwhile, the Debate format pits two AI hosts against each other, presenting contrasting perspectives on the source material to highlight different angles. Users can further customize the duration of each podcast, choosing whether they want a shorter or longer version based on their preferences.

In response to user feedback, Google has also introduced new AI voices for the Audio Overviews, adding variety and improving the listening experience. This update builds on recent developments for NotebookLM. Just a few weeks ago, Google launched Video Overviews, a feature that transforms dense multimedia content such as raw notes, PDFs, and images into clear, concise visual presentations. Additionally, NotebookLM now offers access to a collection of featured notebooks curated from authors, researchers, publications, and nonprofits, enabling users to explore diverse topics ranging from science to social issues. In May, Google also released standalone NotebookLM apps for Android and iOS, making the tool more accessible on mobile devices.

The new Audio Overview formats are available in all supported languages and are expected to roll out to all NotebookLM users this week, according to Google. These updates reflect Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance NotebookLM’s functionality, making it a more versatile tool for students, researchers, professionals, and anyone looking to process and understand complex information efficiently.
